What Is Pataskala's History

What Is Pataskala’s History?

Pataskala has deep roots dating back to the early 1800s. Originally called Conine Town, it was named after early settlers Richard Conine and his wife, Sarah, who permanently settled in the area in 1821 after purchasing over 2,000 acres in Lima Township. Richard Conine established the first grist mill, and the homestead served as a stagecoach stop between Columbus and Newark.

In 1851, Richard Conine platted the village, and by 1852, it was renamed Pataskala—derived from a Delaware word meaning “Licking,” referring to the nearby river. Another early settler, Jess Stoneman Green, also played a key role in selling lots and developing the area. The post office opened in 1852, and the village was officially incorporated in 1891.

In 1996, Pataskala merged with Lima Township, vastly increasing the city’s geographic area and population. Today, the city maintains its historic character while embracing modern development.
