Sunbury was planned from the beginning to be a stagecoach stop. Lawrence Myers, the town’s founder, built an inn near the intersection of two major stagecoach routes (the Old Walhonding Trail and the Delaware Newark Pike), anticipating a large number of stagecoach passengers.
In 1820, the first stagecoach from Mt. Vernon arrived in Sunbury. Famous stagecoach passengers that stopped in Sunbury included:

In 1832, Sunbury served as the origin of Ohio’s inaugural railroad line, which carried goods and passengers to nearby communities. The railway later expanded to other parts of the state and beyond. As train transportation gained popularity, the last stagecoach departed from Sunbury in 1873.

Sunbury, Ohio, is a popular location for antique enthusiasts. This charming village features nine stores and malls, all situated around the historic town square. Sunbury hosts Flea Market Days thrice a year during Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Devoted shoppers can extend their quest to the neighboring towns of Delaware and Powell, where numerous antique stores, gift shops, and frequent antique fairs are available.
Sunbury, OH, is encircled by various parks and natural areas, offering opportunities to enjoy the local wildlife, and historical sites, and spend a day or weekend exploring. Alum Creek State Park, situated roughly 10 miles west of Sunbury, boasts over 300 campsites categorized as full-service or primitive horse camping sites. Rental cabins and campers are also available. The park provides warm showers, restrooms, dump stations, and Wi-Fi access in the camp store. For hikers, six trails vary in difficulty and range from 1.5 to seven miles. One multi-use trail allows hiking, dog sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Additionally, three trails are designed for mountain biking.
Alum Creek Reservoir has four boat launch stations. Bass, bluegill, walleye, saugeye, and crappie are commonly caught in the reservoir’s coves and inlets. A fishing license is required in Sunbury, OH. Hoover Reservoir, another popular fishing area, is situated just south of the town. The reservoir limits outboard engines to 10 horsepower to protect the fish population, resulting in a thriving population of bass and saugeye.
