Powell, Ohio is a suburban city located in Delaware County 14 miles north of Columbus, Ohio. The land on which the city was built was once populated by indigenous Americans including the Huron, Wyandot, Miami, Delaware, Ottawa, Shawnee, Mingo and Erie people. In the 18th century, the land became part of the Ohio Country. During the American Revolution, the states of Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia claimed parts of it while the U.S. was expanding westward. The Land Ordinance of 1785 then opened the region up to settlement by pioneers, including veterans of the American Revolutionary War who had received bounty land warrants as compensation. In 1787, the region was established as the Northwest Territory.
The first settlers arrived in the Powell area in May of 1801, and the land was deeded to Thomas R. Hall. In 1813, the settlement was known as “Middlebury.” In 1839, Hall purchased nearby land and opened a general store. The village was renamed Hall’s Corner in 1850. But in 1857, when it applied for a post office, it was again renamed, this time Powell after the judge who approved the request.
The Columbus and Toledo Railroad (C&T) arrived in Powell in 1872. The primary purpose was to make it easier to transport coal and other high quality materials from Appalachia to the Columbus area and other regions. After merging with two other railroads in 1899, C&T became part of the Hocking Valley Railway. As of 2021, much of the line still operates as the Columbus Subdivision freight line, owned by CSX.
The Powell area is home to several parks and recreational areas, including Liberty Park, which is a popular spot for picnics and outdoor activities. Powell also has a thriving business district with a variety of shops and restaurants, and a charming historic downtown with lots of character. The city hosts a number of annual events, such as the Powell Festival, the Powell Community Fair and the Powell Farmers’ Market. It is also within a short drive to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
The schools in Powell, Ohio are part of the Olentangy Local School District, and are highly regarded for their quality of education. The district is also committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for students, and has been ranked one of the top districts in the nation as well as being the highest ranked district in central Ohio.
The district offers a diverse curriculum that covers a wide range of topics and allows students to explore their interests. The district also offers a variety of extracurricular activities, such as sports teams, clubs, and activities designed to foster student growth and development.
