Lewis Center, Ohio was founded in 1850 by a local landowner William Lewis, who donated the acreage for the town in exchange for naming rights. From about 1800 through 1863, Lewis Center was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Even though Ohio was a “free” state, the Ohio Fugitive Slave Act still allowed for escaped slaves to be captured and returned to their owners. Lewis Center and nearby Africa, Ohio both played important roles in helping escaped slaves journey north toward freedom. The Delaware County Historical Society offers a tour of the houses believed to have been part of the Underground Railroad.
Today, Lewis Center offers the perfect escape into the elements. With an abundance of outdoor space and activities, explore everything from caverns to scenic hiking trails.
