Incorporation Story: Columbus, Ohio, was named in honor of Christopher Columbus in 1812, and named the state capital of Ohio in 1816. Columbus swiftly expanded to become one of the state’s major cities. In the mid-1800s, the city became a railroad center, with many important railways crossing through it. This aided continued expansion and development, and by the beginning of the twentieth century, Columbus had established itself as a significant industrial hub, with businesses ranging from steel production to automotive manufacturing. The city also played a significant role in the Civil War, functioning as a vital staging station for Union forces.
What is Columbus, Ohio, known for? Columbus grew and modernized in the second part of the twentieth century. With the creation of numerous new suburbs and the building of several important highways in the 1950s and 1960s, the city saw enormous expansion.
